Context: Our players were fighting thieves across a gorge, and some of the thieves jumped in to avoid fighting us.
Me, a tiefling rogue in possession of a crossbow that can also perform curses: I shoot attack the last thief.
DM: Okay, roll.
Me: *rolls really high*
DM: As he’s about to jump, he gets skewered by your arrow. He was going to dive into the crevice, but then your arrow stopped him. He is dead.
Me (ooc): I imagined that going differently. Like he jumped, but then my arrow stuck him to the wall. Like about there. *gestures to 5 feet downward from the thief’s position on the site*
DM: You know what, fine. He jumps and is about to escape, but your arrows sticks him to the wall. He struggles to get down, but ultimately dies.
Me: … So, who’s up for some shish kebabs?
Dragonborn (ooc): Wait, do you say that in character?
Me: *mulls it over* Yeah.
Cue everyone laughing

“Speech fillers” are just a human’s way of saying “wait a sec I’m thinking”. It means we think more before we speak, always trying to find the right way to say it. Every language has them. And people shouldn’t be annoyed by it, ever.

This judge had exactly the right reaction to the shameful way nonviolent prisoners are treated in US jails

A woman was denied pants or tampons after being arrested for not completing a diversion course that was part of her sentencing from a shoplifting charge. But see how the judge reacts when she finds out that the prisoner’s humiliating treatment is apparently routine.

This is why it’s so important to vote for your local judges after doing a minimal amount of research. Most people just pick whatever judge is there or has a funny name, but this woman is changing the way prisoners are treated and she was voted in by the county. Always do your research before voting for judges, but don’t discount it as unomportant. You may need someone like her on your side one day.
